    Description

Auctions is pleased to offer a stunning Kalaga or relief tapestry depicting Hanuman, from Myanmar (Burma). A
"Kalaga" is the traditional name for embroidered tapestries from the Mandalay region of Myanmar. The tradition is more than a century old. A kalaga is generally made from linen, silk, velvet and cotton adorned with plain and metallic threads, metal sequins, beads and glass "stones." They commonly depict stories from the Jataka (Buddha's journey towards enlightenment) and the Ramayana (the Hindu epic Journey of King Rama) as well as historical scenes, auspicious animals and signs of the zodiac. The
art form emerged during the Konbaung dynasty in the mid-19th century and reached its zenith during the reign of Mindon Min, when velvet became fashionable at the royal court. This superb example depicts
    Hanuman
, a Hindu god, and an ardent devotee of Rama. He is a central character in the Indian epic Ramayana and its various versions. He also finds mention in several other texts, including Mahabharata, the various Puranas and some Jain texts.
The kalaga measures 16 inches in width by 17.3 inches in height (40.6 cm by 43.9 cm). It shows wear consistent with a dating to the late 19th century. It is very fine collector's piece, and would make a welcome addition to any collection of kalagas or Burmese art.
