    Description

Denver White Arts & Crafts Pottery Jar
    Description and Item Information
Up for sale is this Denver White art pottery jar or lidded vase. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This old, handthrown jar stands about 5 1/4 inches tall, and it is approximately 4 1/4 inches wide. Unpacked, it weighs just under 1 1/4 pounds. It is matte blue with an incised band of fine white patterns around the shoulder area. The lid is a slightly lighter shade of blue, although it is original to the jar. The lid and the pot have glossy, glazed interiors. This would be a fine addition to a collection of American arts and crafts pottery.
    Identification
The jar is marked beneath with an incised marking, "Denver" with a "W" inside the "D." Per Paul Evans' Art Pottery of the United States, F.J. White and Son pottery was founded in Denver during 1893 by Frederick J. White and his son, Francis George White. At first, utilitarian wares were produced, with art pottery production commencing in 1909. At this time, the firm became known as Denver Art Pottery. No molds were used, and clay was mixed in a converted washing machine in the basement. This is an early example, as designated by this style of marking which was used on early pieces.
    Condition
The ginger jar looks great overall. It has no cracks. As shown, the jar's basal edge has a tiny inch pit / flake. There are a few minor scuffs / scratches. There is a small amount of pale brownish discoloration. There is a tiny white spot to the side of the vase. Some tiny glaze bubbles to the interior are as made. Please review the photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying.
