Antique Wood-Carved Burmese Mandalay 'Nat' Spirit. Myanmar, Circa - 19th Century.
    Description:
A beautiful 19th century Mandalay Nat Spirit, worshiped by the people of Myanmar before Buddhism became popular. The Nat is dressed in a long regal style garment, decorated with floral plates, an elaborate collar, draped central panel, and bell-shape at the bottom hem. The head is covered by a Burmese style headdress, cylindrical-shaped with graduated layers rising to what-would-have-been an ornament finial.

The hand-painted features of her face appear realistic and vivid, portraying a benevolent nature, with almond-shaped eyes, long elegant nose, bow-shaped mouth with pink lips, and arching eyebrows outlined in black.
In Burmese culture there are many forms of Nats, angels or local native deities worshipped. Some of these spirits have benevolent nature, while others have been seen to represent more adverse phenomena. Among the key 37 Nats, this figure is that of a benevolent spirit, showcases a natural smiling expression, that shows us the Nats happy nature -
"Oh joyful Guardian Spirit, may you show us with your blessings, the blessings of Nature and the Divine."
Remarks: Excellent condition, preserved by re-applied layers of lacquer paint from time to time, with the wood having normal chips, dents, and minor paint loss, due to the many years of exposure to the weather and other deteriorating conditions.
